10 Easy to Follow Steps for Beginning Cyclists

We are not all Lance Armstrong ready to take on the Tour De France, but riding is a fun way to get in that much needed exercise while enjoying the great outdoors.

1. You need a bike.

A bike should match the activity that you have in mind. There are many options available for commuters, long distance riders, mountain bikers, and weekend warriors.

I seem to have more than my fair share.

2. The bike needs to fit.

It does not need to be fancy or expensive but it does need to fit. Even beginners will benefit from a bike that fits the rider appropriately. The fit of a bike creates a comfortable and safe riding experience.

Have you ever seen a very large man on a really small road bike and when he pedals his knees practically hit his chin? Maybe just maybe its too small.

3. Wear a helmet.

I have said this before and I will say it again. Always wear a helmet when riding a bike. It can be a life saver.

4. Get to know your bike.

Understand how it works from the brakes to the gears and everything in between.

Bike this is my friend, friend this is the bike.

5. Dress appropriately.

This is important for safety reasons and for shear comfort.

There is a time and a place to wear a nightgown but probably not on a bike.

6. Know the rules of the road.

Check your state and city laws before hitting the road.

Rule number one do not hit the road.

7. Know your limits.

It’s better to start out slow and work your way up.  Don’t overdo the first time out or it may be your last. No one wants to feel frustrated and miserable. Always remember it should be fun rather you ride a mile or 100 miles.

Sometimes my limit feels like going from the couch to the refrigerator.

8. Do not use your bike as a clothes dryer.

Keep it clean and in good repair so it will be ready and able when you are.

Should I wear wet clothes or ride the bike. Tough choice.

9. Be prepared.

Learn how to take care of your bike on the fly. Remember to practice changing a tire and putting on a chain before taking the bike out for a spin.

Everyone can act like a boy scout by always being prepared.

10. The most important thing is always safety first.

Be careful when riding in traffic or on country roads because there are always distractions and obstacles that can create an accident.

Life is great, cherish each day and use protection.

Riding a bike is a challenge for everyone but preparing yourself and practicing a few simple procedures will keep it fun and exciting.
